Today I bring you some ideas (not a quote!) from chapter 3 of Jerry Bridges’s The Pursuit of Holiness.
In discussing Hebrews 12:14 (“Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”), Bridges writes that holiness is not a condition of salvation but “a part of salvation that is received by faith in Christ.” (p. 34, 1996 edition)
Bridges then writes about the link between holiness and areas of our Christian lives. He says that holiness is required for
- fellowship with God;
- our own well-being;
- effective service to God; and
- assurance of salvation.
Besides being commanded by God, what have you seen as the benefits of holiness? Have you thought about this before? After all, what God commands is best for us, right?
I don’t know how regular this feature will be, but I thought I’d share some quotes from the books I’m reading. I present these with the understanding that I do not necessarily endorse all of an author’s positions in this particular book or in his/her writing in general. These are quotes which I found interesting, provocative, well-written, or worthy of sharing in some other way.
